چکیده

The correlation of the ROSAT all-sky survey (Snowden et al. 1995) with the Leiden/Dwingeloo H I 21 cm-line survey (Hartmann & Burton 1997) leads to a consistent model of the soft X-ray background (SXRB). The diffuse X-ray radiation originates from three different components: I. The Local Hot Bubble (LHB) (ILHB), II. The diffuse X-ray emission of the Milky Way halo (IHALO), III. The extragalactic X-ray background (IEXTRA). The tracer for the absorption is the H I column density (NH i). The radiative transport equation is:

A window to the Galactic X-ray halo: The ISM towards the Lockman hole

The diffuse soft X-ray emission (E < 1 keV) of the Milky Way is a sensitive tool to study the distribution of the photoelectric absorbing ISM. Our field of interest encloses the Lockman hole. It represents the absolute minimum of NH i on the whole sky, accordingly it is considered as the “window to the distant universe”. To test this hypothesis we correlate the ROSAT all-sky survey energy bands...

A search for soft X-ray emission associated with prominent high-velocity-cloud complexes

We correlate the ROSAT 4 keV all-sky survey with the Leiden/Dwingeloo H i survey, looking for soft X-ray signatures of prominent high-velocity-cloud (HVC) complexes. We study the transfer of 4 keV photons through the interstellar medium in order to distinguish variations in the soft X-ray background (SXRB) intensity caused by photoelectric absorption effects from those due to excess X-ray emiss...

The Diffuse Soft Excess Emission in the Coma Cluster from the Rosat All-sky Survey

ROSAT All-Sky Survey data near the North Galactic Pole was analyzed in order to study the largescale distribution of soft X-ray emission from the Coma cluster. These ROSAT data constitute the only available X-ray observations of Coma that feature an in situ – temporally and spatially contiguous – background, with unlimited and continuous radial coverage. These unique characteristics of the ROSA...

Consequences of Feedback from Early Supernovae for Disk Assembly

In this letter we examine the role of the rst supernovae in proto-galaxies, their role in feedback and the consequences for disk assembly. Extending the picture proposed by Dekel & Silk (1986), we argue that energetic supernovae winds can expel baryons from all proto-galaxies with varying degrees of e ciency. The fraction of baryons retained and hence available to assemble into the baryonic dis...

The dichotomy of the halo of the Milky Way

We summarize evidence that the halo of the Milky Way comprises two different, and broadly overlapping, stellar components. The two structures exhibit different chemical compositions, spatial distributions, and kinematics. These results were obtained through an analysis of more than 20,000 calibration stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The duality of the stellar halo directly impact...
